​Directions and Travel Information

If you are flying in or taking the train, here is everything you need to know

The University of Surrey is located in Guildford, a historic town in Surrey, England. Nestled in a picturesque setting, the campus is surrounded by scenic countryside yet is conveniently close to London, just 34 miles southwest of the city. With excellent transport links, the University is easily accessible by train, bus, and car, making it an ideal location for students and visitors alike. The vibrant town of Guildford offers a mix of cultural, recreational, and shopping opportunities, complementing the University's dynamic academic environment.

Trains

The nearest train station to the University of Surrey is Guildford, located just a 15-minute walk from the campus. If you're travelling from London, direct trains run regularly from London Waterloo and Clapham Junction to Guildford. Additionally, Great Western Railway (GWR) operates an hourly service from Gatwick Airport to Guildford. Most trains are operated by either South Western Railway (SWR) or GWR. Guildford is on the main line between London Waterloo and Portsmouth. Half-hourly train services run from Guildford to Waterloo, with journey times of around 40 minutes. When exiting the train station, look for signs directing you "to the University" to exit from the back towards Farnham road. From there, you can catch buses operated by Stagecoach that travel through the campus. Alternatively, you can follow Google Maps to the Rik Medlik Building for the walking route to the campus, which takes approximately 15 minutes.

Airports

The nearest airport to the University of Surrey is London Gatwick (LGW), with easy train connections to Guildford.

Via London Heathrow

RailAir coaches connect Guildford railway station with Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 and Heathrow Central Bus Station every hour from early until late, seven days a week.

Alternatively, National Express coaches travel between Woking station and Heathrow Airport Terminals 2,3 and 5 (with onward connections to Terminal 4) 18 times a day. There are frequent trains from Woking to Guildford, check National Rail.

Via London Gatwick

Gatwick station is positioned in the South Terminal of the airport and provides direct rail-air link trains to Guildford hourly between approximately 5:15am (6am on Sundays) and 11pm. check the National Rail website.

Via London City

This airport is in London and is well connected with the tube system. From there, travel to London Waterloo train station, and follow the instructions on how to reach campus by train.

Via London Standsted

This is not the most convenient airport to reach the University. Train and bus services connect this airport to Liverpool Street Station in London. From there, different routes can take you to London Waterloo train station. From there, please follow the instruction on how to reach campus by train.

Via London Luton

This is not the most convenient airport to reach the University. A bus connects the airport to a train station from which regular services take you to central London. Alternatively, buses connect the airport to central London (see the London Luton Airport website for further information). From there different routes can take you to London Waterloo train station. From there, please follow the instructions on how to reach campus by train.

By Car

Guildford is 30 miles southwest of London, on the A3 London-Portsmouth road.

From the London direction

If approaching from London or the M25 (Junction 10), remain on the bypass (A3) until you reach the exit signed to the Cathedral and University. The campus is very close to this junction. Simply follow the signs to the University, being careful not to follow signs to the Town Centre.

On the A322 or A323

If approaching on the A322 or A323 from Bagshot or Aldershot, at the A3 roundabout take the exit signed to Portsmouth, and then turn off the A3 at the first exit (signed to the Cathedral and University).

From the A281 or A3100

If entering Guildford from Horsham (A281) or Godalming (A3100), leave the central gyratory system at the exit signed for Farnham (A31). After approximately 200 yards, at the mini-roundabout, take the first turning right into Guildford Park Road, and continue along Madrid Road and The Chase for a mile. At the next roundabout, take the third exit for the University entrance.
